Kevin Smith: The Value of Gold

UCF's most recognizable football players over the last several years, former running back Kevin Smith came to terms with the Detroit Lions after being selected in the third-round of April's NFL draft.

According to Scout.com NFL Expert Adam Caplan, Smith only signed a three-year deal with base salaries of: (2008) $295,000; (2009) $385,000; (2010) $470,000. Smith will also receive a signing bonus of just under $650,000.

The coaching staff believes Smith is a perfect fit for new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto's power rushing scheme, and he will compete with Tatum Bell, Brian Calhoun, and Artose Pinner for the Lions starting job.

"The Detroit Lions drafted Kevin Smith in the third round with the belief that the former University of Central Florida running back will take over the starting job at that position this season," according to Adam Caplan.

The three-year deal that Smith signed paves the way for him to hit free agency a year early and potentially cash in on the open market if he can become the running back that Knights fans were treated to during his tenure in Orlando.
