Kent State improved to
3-2 overall with the win and 2-0 in the conference while UCF dropped to 1-3 and
0-1 in the MAC.
Kent State jumped out to a commanding 23-3 lead thanks to the arm of Joshua
Cribbs. The junior tossed two touchdown passes to Darrell Dowery -- 39 and three
yards – along with three Travis Mayle field goals.
In four games in 2003, UCF has been outscored 48-3 after the Golden Flashes
scored 13 first quarter points. UCF’s first score of the game came when Matt Prater chipped in a 26-yard field goal.
Cribbs’ second touchdown pass to Dowery came at the start of the second quarter
to extend the KSU lead to 20-3. All four of Kent State’ scoring drives began in
UCF territory.
Mayle drilled his third field goal of the half with 12:52 remaining in the first
half to give the Golden Flashes a 23-3 lead. The drive was set-up after UCF
fumbled for the second time in its own territory.
The Golden Knights finally scored a touchdown with 4:03 left in the first half
when Ryan Schneider found Tavaris Capers on a 13-yard touchdown pass. The
scoring pass marked the 25th consecutive game that Schneider has thrown a
touchdown, extending his own school record.
Capers tied a career-high with nine receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown on
the day. Capers has finished with nine receptions in each of UCF’s four games
this season.
Kent State capitalized on UCF’s fourth turnover of the game and the second
interception thrown by Schneider when Usama Young picked off Schneider at the
UCF 25-yard line. From there, Charles Newton scored on a two-yard touchdown run
to give the home team a 29-10 lead.
Redshirt freshman Dontavius Wilcox scored from two yards out with 3:30 remaining
in the game to close the deficit to 29-16. The touchdown was the first career
score for Wilcox.
The Golden Knights return to the Florida Citrus Bowl next Saturday to face
Buffalo in MAC action. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Ryan Schneider found Tavaris Capers on a 13-yard touchdown pass to extend his
school record of 25 straight games with at least one touchdown pass.
Schneider also tied Donovan McNabb (Syracuse), Rex Grossman (Florida) and John
Elway (Stanford) for 16th place all-time in NCAA history with his 77th career
touchdown pass on the 13-yard touchdown pass to Capers.
Capers tied a career-high with nine receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown on
the day. Capers has finished with nine receptions in each of UCF’s four games
this season.
For the first time in 2003, the UCF offense scored in the first quarter when
Matt Prater kicked a 26-yard field goal. The first quarter score broke a streak
of four straight games without a first quarter score.
UCF trailed 13-3 after the first quarter. In four games in 2003, UCF has been
outscored 48-3 in the opening period of play.
Anthony Willis made his first career start at cornerback Saturday for the Golden
Knights.
Junior defensive end Josh Stephens recorded his first career sack in the first
half. Stephens also forced his first career fumble by Kent State quarterback
Joshua Cribbs in the second quarter.
For the third time this season, UCF’s special teams blocked a kick as Antoine Poe blocked a field goal in the fourth quarter.
Redshirt freshman Dontavius Wilcox scored his first career touchdown with a
two-yard score in the fourth quarter.
