Thomas sees opportunity at Miami

Number two 2013 outside linebacker Matthew Thomas visited the Hometown Hurricanes when they welcomed FSU Saturday. Both the Seminoles and the Hurricanes have been heavy in the mix to land the Booker T. Washington (Miami, FL) standout in February. Thomas and many of his teammates were on hand to watch the FSU beat Miami 33-20 in Coral Gables. Get the latest right here.

"It was live, I got to the stadium, I got to feel the intensity that the game was going to bring," Matthew Thomas said.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound athlete said he spoke with Miami Head Coach Al Golden and almost every other Hurricanes coach too. It was clear he was a priority to the staff.

"They were just saying, ‘we're almost done, let's make it happen, let's bring it home, let's rebuild,'" Thomas said.

"I've heard it before, it was like a repeat, but I was thinking about it again. There is a spot to play early and right here in my hometown."

Thomas has also been high on Florida State throughout his recruitment. He kept a close eye on the defensive play of both teams.

"I could tell that FSU was a little bit more experienced than Miami. You could see Miami lacked playmakers on defense, but you can tell they're young guys and they're competing. The game could have been worse because they're playing so many freshmen and FSU is so experienced," he said.

Thomas said he likes the idea of being a difference-maker on a less experienced team rather than stepping in to a strong team that doesn't need him as much.

"Me personally, I'd rather just come in and play early, help the team out. I wouldn't want to sit," he said.

Thomas still has no leaders and no official visits set up – he plans to save those for after his season. Throughout his recruitment he's mentioned Florida State, Miami, Alabama, USC and Georgia as being in the mix. Stay tuned to FOX Sports NEXT for the latest.
